As the end of the year rolls around the uptake of sweets and lollies slowly increases. As Ossie knows all to well this includes his beloved chocolate. The sweet treats not only attract humans, but ants too! Ants need a range of different foods (like us) but most certainly have a preference of what they like. There are three different types of food that ants will gravitate to, sugar, oils, and protein. Sugar eating ants love foods like lollies, honey, fruits, and yes chocolate. This means that these types of food need to be kept in a sealed container and properly stored to avoid contamination. The interesting thing when it comes to ants though is that they like to change up their eating habits. Some prefer sugar based food in the spring and winter, however switch to a protein based food in the autumn and summer.
This switch up of food preferences is why using a delayed action insecticide is crucial when getting rid of ants (especially before Christmas). The delayed nature of the chemical allows ants to become exposed when foraging and take it back to the nest where they share their delicious treats. By making sure the ant does not die as soon as it’s exposed it means that the rest of the colony becomes exposed.
So not only do the visible ants die, but the underlying issue of the colony as well.
This is why we recommend getting your ant treatments done before the height of summer to allow time for the whole colony to be effected and ensure a ant free pavlova!
